Magi Puig
Magi Puig was born in Palou, Catalonia, in 1966. He lives and works in Barcelona.
The works of Magí Puig are nourished by his travels and scenes from daily life. His themes evoke a mosaic of diverse landscapes: from the sun-drenched shores of Senegal to the bustling streets of Vietnam, passing through iconic cities like Venice and Havana. Puig also captures vibrant moments, with figures moving on beaches, in marketplaces, or circus performers in action.
Each painting focuses on a central element that the artist shapes with meticulous attention. Often using close-ups, he breathes intense life into the figures and objects he depicts. Buildings and characters, painted in dark colors, emerge powerfully from luminous backgrounds, gaining volume and sculptural presence. Sometimes, he plays with bold angles, creating captivating perspectives that draw the eye.
Powerful in his use of color, Puig transcends appearance to capture the essence of reality. Luminosity is a constant characteristic of his work. He handles light with brilliant virtuosity, harnessing its distorting effect on colors and weaving dense yet translucent backgrounds. In some works, light and water merge to create an almost ethereal atmosphere, like a shimmering mist. In others, light effects take center stage, adding dimensions of distance and mystery to his compositions.
Magí Puig is highly sought after by many collectors and has exhibited at the Ariel Jakob gallery in Paris since 2003. His ability to capture moments of beauty and emotion secures him a distinctive place in the contemporary artistic landscape.
